ADHD

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is characterized by problems with attention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. It affects 5-8% of school-aged children. Although children with ADHD can be successful, ADHD can lead to school failure, problems with peer relationships, family stress, substance abuse and accidental injuries if the problem is left untreated.

If your child is struggling in school, seems overly hyper, or is easily distracted or forgetful, we want to help.

Getting Started
To get started, text or call us at (816) 228-4770 to speak with our ADHD coordinator. The coordinator will discuss what kind of problems your child is having and refer you to the appropriate provider. In many cases, this will be a physician in our office. However, if the coordinator determines that your child has a more complicated case, your child may be referred to a specialist outside our office.

Evaluation
Management of ADHD should be a team effort. Your child’s team may include parents, physicians, nurses, teachers, counselors, and coaches. To properly evaluate your child for ADHD, it is important that we get feedback from the various team members involved. We may also need to obtain information from other sources.

Below are some of the items that will be necessary for your child’s initial evaluation. Once our office has received this paperwork, we will contact you to schedule the first appointment.

• ADHD Questionnaire form completed by school and parents (Please check with the ADHD coordinator to find out which set of forms will be required for your visit)
• Grade cards for 2 years
• Copy of any school testing results
• Copy of any school communication to the parents
• Copy of IEP (Individual Educational Plan), if applicable
• Copy of reports from counselor or therapist, if applicable

Management
If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, there will be periodic appointments with one of our physicians so the physician can regularly monitor your child’s progress. In between physician visits, parents will be asked to meet with a nurse to make sure their child is still doing well. It is important to schedule these appointments about one week in advance to prevent your child from running out of medication.

Our goal is to give children with ADHD an opportunity to be successful in all aspects of their life. Text or call us at (816) 228-4770 to get started in our program.
